If you want to try corn silk as a traditional beverage, the preparation is simple.
Ingredients
- A small handful of fresh corn silk
- 2–3 cups of water
Step 1: Remove the Silk
Carefully remove the husk from fresh corn and collect the silky strands.
Discard any silk that looks moldy, dirty, or damaged.
Step 2: Wash Thoroughly
Place the corn silk under cool running water and rinse it well.
Fresh produce can contain dirt or agricultural residues, so cleaning it carefully is important.
Step 3: Add Water
Place the cleaned corn silk in a saucepan and add approximately 2–3 cups of water.
Step 4: Simmer
Bring the water to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat.
Allow the corn silk to simmer for approximately 10 minutes.
The water should take on a light golden color.
Step 5: Strain
Remove the saucepan from the heat and strain the liquid through a fine strainer.
Discard the silk and allow the tea to cool slightly.
You can enjoy it warm or refrigerate it and serve it chilled.
How to Make Dried Corn Silk
Corn silk can also be dried so you can use it later.
First, rinse the silk thoroughly and remove excess moisture. Spread it in a thin layer on a clean tray and allow it to dry completely in a clean, well-ventilated place away from excessive moisture.
Once completely dry, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry location.
Always discard dried herbs if they develop an unusual smell, visible mold, or signs of moisture.
