Everyone occasionally complains about other people. However, constantly sharing your private business, spreading rumors, or making fun of you when you are not around can seriously damage trust.
You may eventually discover that things you told your friend privately have somehow reached other people.
A person who regularly reveals your secrets may do the same thing with someone else’s secrets—and possibly yours again in the future.
A healthy friendship requires a reasonable level of trust. If you repeatedly feel nervous about what someone might tell others, that feeling deserves attention.
3. They Disappear When You Need Them
Friendship is not about being available every second of every day. People have jobs, families, responsibilities, and personal problems.
But there is a difference between being busy and only being present when it benefits them.
A fake friend may call you whenever they need advice, money, transportation, help with a project, or emotional support. Yet when you are the person who needs a listening ear, they suddenly become unavailable.
You might notice a pattern:
They need something → they call.
You need something → they are “too busy.”
You have good news → they barely respond.
They have good news → they expect your full attention.
Over time, this can make the friendship feel completely one-sided.
4. They Constantly Compete With You
Healthy friends can motivate each other without turning everything into a competition.
A fake or overly competitive friend may feel the need to prove that they are always doing better than you.
You buy something new, and they immediately tell you about something more expensive they purchased.
You achieve a goal, and they explain why their achievement is bigger.
You tell a story, and they interrupt with a story designed to make theirs sound more impressive.
Instead of simply enjoying conversations with you, they seem determined to win them.
Friendship should not feel like a permanent contest.
5. They Embarrass You in Front of Other People
One of the clearest warning signs can be the way someone treats you around others.
A person may make jokes about your appearance, relationships, mistakes, finances, or personal life and then hide behind the words:
“I’m only joking!”
Humor can certainly be part of a healthy friendship. The problem begins when the joke repeatedly humiliates one person while everyone else gets to laugh.
A genuine friend should understand the difference between playful teasing and deliberately making someone uncomfortable.
If you tell them that something bothers you and they continue doing it, the issue becomes even more serious.
