7 Things Only Fake Friends Do: How to Recognize the Signs

  • by

Friendship should make you feel supported, respected, and comfortable being yourself. But not every person who calls themselves your friend genuinely has your best interests at heart. Sometimes, a friendship can look perfectly normal on the surface while certain behaviors reveal that the relationship is one-sided or unhealthy.

A fake friend does not always look like an obvious enemy. In many cases, they can be friendly, funny, and caring when everything is going their way. The warning signs often appear in small moments—how they react to your success, how they treat you around other people, or whether they respect your boundaries.

Here are seven behaviors that can help you recognize when a friendship may not be as genuine as it seems.

1. They Are Happy for You Only When You Are Struggling

A genuine friend can celebrate your achievements without feeling threatened by them. A fake or insecure friend, however, may seem unusually comfortable when you are having problems but become distant when things start going well.

For example, they may happily listen when you complain about work, relationships, or money. But when you receive a promotion, reach an important goal, or share exciting news, their reaction suddenly changes.

They might minimize your achievement by saying:

“You just got lucky.”

“That isn’t such a big deal.”

“Anyone could have done that.”

Pay attention to patterns rather than one isolated comment. Someone having a bad day does not automatically make them a fake friend. But repeatedly refusing to celebrate your happiness can be a sign that the friendship is not emotionally supportive.

2. They Talk About You Behind Your Back
