Tomatoes and garlic are two familiar foods that have attracted considerable interest for their potential role in supporting men’s health. Because tomatoes contain lycopene and garlic contains sulfur-containing plant compounds, some people promote a combination of the two as a natural way to reduce prostate swelling. However, claims that a tomato-and-garlic drink can shrink an enlarged prostate faster than medical treatment are not established.
An enlarged prostate, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), becomes increasingly common with age. It can cause frequent urination, getting up several times during the night, a weak urine stream, difficulty starting urination, dribbling, or a feeling that the bladder has not completely emptied.
Tomatoes can be included in a healthy diet because they provide lycopene, vitamin C, potassium, and other nutrients. Garlic can also add flavor and plant compounds to meals without requiring excessive salt. Including these foods regularly may be part of an overall heart-healthy eating pattern, but they should not be considered a replacement for treatment of BPH.
A simple tomato-and-garlic drink can be prepared as a nutritious food beverage. Wash two ripe tomatoes, remove the stems, and blend them with one small peeled garlic clove and a little water. Blend until smooth and drink fresh. If the flavor is too strong, the mixture can instead be used as a sauce or added to a meal. There is no established medical ratio that has been proven to shrink an enlarged prostate.
Men experiencing urinary symptoms should not assume that every problem is simply BPH. Similar symptoms can occur with urinary infections, bladder problems, prostatitis, certain medications, or other conditions. A medical evaluation can help determine the actual cause.
Treatment for BPH depends on how severe the symptoms are and how much they affect daily life. Some men benefit from lifestyle adjustments, while others may need prescription medication or a procedure. Medical treatments are designed specifically to improve urine flow, relax the prostate and bladder outlet, or reduce prostate size when appropriate.
It is also important to seek medical attention promptly if someone cannot urinate, has blood in the urine, develops fever and painful urination, or experiences severe lower abdominal or pelvic pain.
Tomatoes and garlic can be excellent additions to a balanced diet, but a homemade drink should not be presented as a faster alternative to proven BPH treatment. There is currently no reliable evidence that a tomato-and-garlic mixture can rapidly shrink an enlarged prostate or outperform prescribed medical treatment.
