For four long years I had waited for the moment when I would finally see my husband hold the baby in his arms that we had dreamed of for so long.
But when Ethan finally bent over our newborn daughter and noticed something behind her ear, his smile vanished instantly.
The large bouquet of white roses slipped from his hand. The flowers fell to the floor and scattered across the hospital floor.
Then he looked at me as if everything he had previously believed in had changed in a matter of seconds.
« Why didn’t you tell me this before? »
For a moment I thought my heart would stop beating.
I had no idea what he was talking about.
And before that morning was over, I was to learn that the tiny spot on our daughter’s skin was connected to a family secret that Ethan had hidden from me throughout our marriage.
The morning after Lily’s birth
That morning I woke up to the quiet, steady beeping of a hospital monitor.
Next to my bed stood the small crib. In it lay our newborn daughter, her tiny fist resting close to her body.
Lily.
My Lily.
For several seconds, I did nothing but look at her. I wanted to memorize every detail: her small face, her closed eyes, her fine dark hair, and the tiny movements she made even in her sleep.
After four years full of negative pregnancy tests, doctor’s appointments, disappointments and tears, which I often tried to hide from others, she was now actually lying in front of me.
She was finally there.
I still found it hard to believe that the long wait was really over.
Months earlier, when Ethan and I had first seen the two pink lines on the pregnancy test, he had immediately taken me in his arms.
He had hugged me tightly and whispered:
« You and our little daughter are my whole world. »
The pregnancy subsequently became one of the happiest times of my life.
Of course, there had been worries. After everything we had been through, it was sometimes difficult for me to completely relax. Nevertheless, with each passing month, the feeling grew that our long-held dream would actually become a reality.
The birth itself, however, was a completely different story.
A difficult start
After twenty-one exhausting hours of labor, the mood in the room suddenly changed.
What had previously seemed strenuous but controlled quickly became hectic.
The doctors moved faster. Voices became shorter and more focused. A nurse held Ethan back while I was taken down the corridor.
The last thing I clearly remembered was his voice behind me.
He called something after me, but I could hardly understand the words.
After that, my memory consisted only of individual images.
Bright light.
People who were leaning over me.
Someone said clearly:
« 3:17 p.m. »
And then I finally heard our daughter’s powerful scream.
For a moment, that sound overshadowed everything else.
The next morning Lily was feeling wonderful.
She weighed seven pounds and two ounces, and Nurse Stella told me that Ethan had been pacing restlessly in the waiting area since five o’clock in the morning.
He had apparently hardly slept.
When Stella finally asked me if I was ready for a visitor, I had to smile.
« Send him in. »
The door opened just a moment later.
Ethan entered the room.
His hair was disheveled. His shirt was wrinkled because he had practically spent the night in the hospital.
And in his hands he held the largest bouquet of white roses I had ever seen.
He immediately came to my bed and kissed me on the forehead.
« This is the happiest day of my life. »
I could see that he was serious.
Then he turned to Lily.
The moment everything changed
Ethan was still smiling as he bent over the baby’s crib.
I watched him, waiting for the moment when he would really look at our daughter.
But suddenly he froze.
His eyes wandered over Lily’s small face and finally settled on a spot just behind her ear.
The bouquet of flowers slowly drooped in his hands.
Then he lost his footing.
The roses slipped through his fingers and fell to the ground.
Some blossoms lay directly next to his shoe, others rolled further across the smooth hospital floor.
„Ethan?“
He did not answer.
« What’s up? »
When he finally looked at me, I saw something in his face that I had never seen in him before.
Shock.
Confusion.
And almost disbelief.
Then he asked:
« Why didn’t you tell me this before? »
My stomach immediately tightened.
« What should I have told you? »
Ethan carefully reached for Lily, lifted her out of the crib and brought her closer to me.
« Look at them. »
« I am looking at her. »
« Don’t you see it? »
His reaction scared me.
For a terrifying moment, several thoughts raced through my head at once.
Did he think Lily wasn’t his daughter?
Had he discovered something about her that the doctors had overlooked?
Was there something wrong with our baby?
« She’s your daughter, Ethan. What are you talking about? »
Suddenly, tears came to his eyes.
“No. Eloise, that’s not what I mean.”
He sat heavily on the chair next to my bed and buried his face in his hands for a moment.
When he looked up again, he seemed exhausted and ashamed at the same time.
« That came across completely wrong. I’m sorry. »
« Then explain to me what you mean. »
Ethan looked at Lily again.
« There’s something you need to know about me. »
I stared at him.
« Something I should have told you a long time ago. »
« How long? »
He didn’t reply immediately.
« I kept telling myself that it didn’t matter. »
Then he looked at our daughter again.
« Now it matters. »
« Ethan, please. Just say it. »
« I was afraid. »
« Afraid of what? »
He gasped for air.
« For four years I’ve been afraid to tell you. But after seeing Lily, I can no longer pretend that this part of my past doesn’t exist. »
Sadie’s unexpected reaction
Before Ethan could continue speaking, the door to the hospital room opened.
I was expecting Nurse Stella.
Instead, my mother-in-law Sadie came in.
She was carrying a light pink gift bag and smiling broadly. She obviously couldn’t wait to meet her granddaughter.
Sadie and I had never been particularly close.
We got along, but there had always been a certain distance between us. Ethan also didn’t talk much about his childhood, so many parts of his family history consisted of only brief remarks for me.
Sadie took two steps into the room.
Then she saw Ethan’s face.
Her smile vanished.
« Ethan? What happened? »
Her gaze shifted from her son to me.
Then to Lily.
Something about Sadie’s reaction immediately reminded me of the baby shower three weeks earlier.
At the time, I happened to see her looking at an old envelope in her handbag.
The envelope looked worn, as if it had been stored for a very long time.
When Sadie noticed me looking, she immediately folded it up and put it away again.
I had asked her what it was.
She just laughed.
« Just something old from my past. »
I didn’t ask any further questions after that.
Ethan also avoided certain topics when it came to his family.
For example, he never showed me any baby photos of himself.
When I asked about his father Levi, he usually just said:
« Dad is a good man. »
Then he changed the subject.
At the time, I didn’t see anything special in it.
Now, each of these small details suddenly seemed different.
Ethan looked at his mother.
„Mom.“
Sadie slowly went to bed.
Then she bent down to Lily.
The moment she saw the spot behind the baby’s ear, she clapped her hand over her mouth.
Ethan whispered:
« Mom. She has it. »
Sadie’s eyes filled with tears.
I looked back and forth between the two of them.
« She’s got something? »
The small triangular birthmark
Ethan gently brushed Lily’s dark hair to the side.
Directly behind her ear was a tiny, pale, triangular birthmark.
It was barely bigger than my fingernail.
Of course I had seen it, but I hadn’t attached any particular significance to it.
« That? » I asked. « That’s just a birthmark. »
Ethan nodded slowly.
« I had exactly the same thing. »
I looked at him in surprise.
« In the same place. In the same shape. Mom has a photo of it. Mine disappeared before I turned five. »
Sadie took my hand.
Then she said something that only confused me more.
« This time it’s happening in the family. Just not in Levi’s family. »
I looked at her without understanding.
« What does this mean? »
Ethan exhaled deeply.
And then the secret finally came to light.
« Levi is not my biological father. »
I stared at him.
For a moment I didn’t know what to say.
“He is my father in every way that truly matters,” Ethan quickly added. “He raised me. He was there for everything. But biologically, there was another man.”
Sadie lowered her gaze.
« His name was Sebastian. »
I tried to understand what I was hearing.
« You knew this throughout our entire marriage? »
“Yes.”
« And you never told me? »
Ethan seemed ashamed.
“I was afraid that it would somehow make Levi seem less important. He raised me. Sebastian was just a name Mom gave me once when I was fifteen. I decided then that he would be nothing more than that name to me.”
Now I finally understood why Ethan had reacted so strongly at the sight of our daughter.
« So when you were looking at Lily just now, you didn’t think that she might not be your daughter? »
His eyes widened.
« For God’s sake, no. »
He grabbed my hand.
“I looked at our daughter and suddenly saw the first visible connection to a man I had never met. I simply didn’t know how to deal with it.”
Sadie gently squeezed my fingers.
Then she confessed that she herself had encouraged Ethan to keep the truth to himself when he was young.
She had been afraid Levi might feel replaced.
I looked down at Lily.
She slept peacefully and completely unaware in my arms.
She had no idea that this tiny triangular birthmark had just brought decades of family history to light.
Finally, I looked at Ethan and Sadie.
« No more secrets. »
Ethan nodded immediately.
« I promise it. »
Then I turned to Sadie.
« And I think we should find out who Sebastian was. »
Ethan tensed up immediately.
« No. I can’t do that to Dad. »
“This isn’t about replacing Levi,” I said. “Lily will eventually have questions about where she comes from. She deserves honest answers.”
Sadie remained silent.
Then she slowly reached into her handbag.
I recognized the worn envelope immediately.
It was the same one I had seen at the baby shower.
She placed it in Ethan’s hands.
« I’ve carried it with me since before you were born. I always told myself that I would give it to you as soon as you were ready to ask questions. »
Ethan examined the envelope for a moment before slowly opening it.
Inside was a faded photograph.
The image showed a young man laughing. His head was turned slightly away from the camera.
And behind his ear was a small triangular mark.
Right where Lily’s birthmark was.
There was a note underneath the photo.
An address was carefully written on it in blue ink.
