PART 2 — THE STRANGER IN THE SUV

  • by

Adrian was waiting outside the clinic.

The moment he saw my face, he knew.

“You found something.”

I handed him the photograph.

He stared at it.

Then his expression changed.

“You know this baby?”

“No.”

He turned the photograph over.

There was a number written on the back.

He recognized it immediately.

“That’s a case number.”

“What case?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he pulled out his phone and made a call.

“It’s confirmed,” he said.

A pause.

“Yes. She’s here.”

He ended the call.

I stared at him.

“Who were you talking to?”

“My attorney.”

“Why?”

“Because we need to tell you something before anyone else does.”

“What?”

Adrian looked directly at me.

“My younger brother disappeared eleven years ago.”

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“He was involved with the fertility clinic.”

My blood ran cold.

“How?”

“He was one of the clinic’s financial investigators.”

I stared at him.

“He discovered irregularities involving embryo records.”

“And?”

“He tried to report them.”

“What happened?”

“He disappeared.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Do you think my baby was involved?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“We don’t think.”

He looked at the photograph.

“We’re almost certain.”

PART 6 — RYAN’S MISTRESS

That evening, I received a message.

From Ryan.

We need to talk.

I ignored it.

Another message arrived.

I know you’re pregnant.

My heart stopped.

A third message.

Where are you?

I blocked his number.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Madeline?”

“Who is this?”

“I’m sorry.”

I recognized her voice.

The woman from my house.

Ryan’s mistress.

“What do you want?”

“I need to tell you something.”

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“You need to.”

Her voice cracked.

“Ryan isn’t the man you think he is.”

I almost laughed.

“I already know he’s a liar.”

“No.”

She began crying.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

There was silence.

Then she whispered:

“Ryan didn’t leave you because of me.”

My stomach tightened.

“Then why?”

“Because of the baby.”

“What baby?”

“Yours.”

I couldn’t speak.

She continued.

“Ryan found out months ago that you were pregnant.”

My heart hammered.

“But I didn’t know.”

“He did.”

“How?”

“He paid someone at the clinic.”

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The sudden divorce.

His mother’s cruelty.

The mistress.

The heir.

It had all been staged.

But why?

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Ryan doesn’t want your baby.”

My blood ran cold.

“He wants the baby for his family.”

PART 7 — THE REAL PLAN

Adrian listened without interrupting as I told him everything.

When I finished, he looked furious.

“Your husband knew about the pregnancy.”

“Yes.”

“And he deliberately made you believe you were infertile.”

“Yes.”

“And he brought another woman into the house.”

“Yes.”

Adrian stared at the documents.

“Why would anyone go this far?”

I remembered Ryan’s mother.

The way she always talked about the family name.

The heir.

The inheritance.

Then Adrian found something in the records.

“Here.”

He pointed.

A trust.

Established years ago.

The beneficiary was Ryan.

But there was a condition.

Ryan would receive the full inheritance only if he had a biological heir before his fortieth birthday.

I stared at the document.

“That’s why.”

Adrian nodded.

“They needed a child.”

“But why not simply have one with the other woman?”

“Because the trust requires a legitimate biological heir.”

My stomach twisted.

“So they wanted my baby.”

“Yes.”

I whispered:

“And they wanted me gone.”

PART 8 — THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The mistress met us the next day.

Her name was Vanessa.

She looked completely different without the expensive makeup and designer clothes.

She sat across from me in a quiet café, trembling.

“I didn’t know at first,” she said.

“Know what?”

“That Ryan was using me.”

She looked down.

“He told me you couldn’t have children.”

“He lied.”

“I know that now.”

She took a breath.

“Six months ago, Ryan told me he needed me to pretend I was pregnant.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“He wanted his mother to believe the baby was mine.”

“But you’re actually pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“Whose child?”

She looked away.

“Not Ryan’s.”

Silence.

Then she said:

“The baby’s father is Ryan’s business partner.”

I closed my eyes.

Everything was unraveling.

“Why stay?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of Ryan?”

She nodded.

“He threatened me.”

“With what?”

“He said if I told you the truth, he’d make sure I lost everything.”

I stared at her.

Then she placed a small flash drive on the table.

“This contains everything.”

“What is it?”

“Emails. Bank transfers. Voice recordings.”

She pushed it toward me.

“Your husband planned everything.”

I picked it up.

“And your baby?”

She looked at me.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

For the first time, I felt sorry for her.

She had been used too.

PART 9 — THE RECORDING

That night, Adrian’s attorney played the recordings.

Ryan’s voice filled the room.

“She’ll never know.”

Then his mother’s voice.

“What about the child?”

Ryan answered:

“Once the divorce is final, we’ll take custody.”

My blood ran cold.

His mother asked:

“And Madeline?”

Ryan laughed.

“She’ll have nothing. No house. No money. No child.”

I covered my mouth.

Then came the sentence that made Adrian freeze.

“The embryo belongs to our family.”

I stared at him.

“Did he just say embryo?”

Adrian nodded.

We listened again.

Ryan continued:

“The clinic made a mistake years ago. Madeline was never supposed to know.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian said:

“We need to find that child.”

I looked at the photograph.

The newborn.

The hospital bracelet.

The mysterious case number.

And suddenly I realized something.

Maybe the baby from eleven years ago hadn’t disappeared.

Maybe someone had been protecting him.

PART 10 — THE FINAL DOOR

Two days later, Adrian received a call.

He looked at me.

“We found him.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

“Seattle.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Adrian handed me a file.

Inside was a photograph.

A young man.

Eighteen years old.

Dark hair.

My eyes.

The same small birthmark beneath the eyebrow.

I stared at his face.

Then I saw the name.

Noah Cole.

I looked at Adrian.

“Cole?”

He nodded.

“My brother took him.”

“What?”

“My brother discovered what happened at the clinic. He knew someone was trying to take the child.”

“So he protected him?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Because your husband and his family were looking for him.”

I started crying.

After eleven years of believing I had never been a mother…

I finally had a name.

A face.

A son.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A young man’s voice came through.

“Mom?”

I couldn’t speak.

He continued softly.

“I’ve been waiting eleven years to meet you.”

I closed my eyes.

Tears streamed down my face.

Then he said:

“There’s something else you need to know.”

My heart pounded.

“What?”

“I know who helped my father hide me.”

I froze.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

There was a long silence.

Then Noah whispered:

“Ryan’s mother.”

And suddenly I realized the betrayal went much deeper than I had ever imagined.
