Oven Cleaning — Step-by-Step Instructions

  • by

Make sure the oven is completely switched off and cool.

Remove the oven racks and take out any loose crumbs or pieces of burned food.

Place an old towel underneath the open oven door to protect the floor from drips.

Step 2: Make the Cleaning Paste

Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of dish soap to a small bowl.

Gradually add 1–2 tablespoons of warm water, mixing until you have a thick, spreadable paste.

If the mixture is too thin, add a little more baking soda.

Step 3: Apply the Paste

Put on your gloves and spread the paste over greasy and dirty areas using a sponge or cloth.

Concentrate on the oven floor, sides, and other areas with baked-on residue.

Avoid the heating elements, gas burners/openings, fans, electrical components, and rubber door gasket.

Step 4: Let It Sit

Allow the paste to sit for approximately 15–30 minutes.

For particularly stubborn grease, you can leave a baking-soda-based paste longer if your oven manufacturer’s instructions permit it.

The paste will help soften the residue, making it easier to remove.

Step 5: Scrub

Use a non-scratch sponge or soft scrubber to gently work over the dirty areas.

For stubborn spots, apply a little more paste and scrub again rather than using excessive force.

Avoid steel wool or abrasive pads that could scratch the oven’s interior coating.

Step 6: Wipe Everything Away

Dampen a clean microfiber cloth with warm water and thoroughly wipe the oven interior.

You may need to rinse and wring out the cloth several times to remove all of the baking soda and soap residue.

Step 7: Clean the Racks

While the paste is working, clean the racks separately.

Place them in a sink or bathtub and soak them in warm water with some dish soap for 30–60 minutes.

Scrub with a suitable brush or sponge, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely.

Step 8: Final Wipe

Put the clean, dry racks back into the oven.

Leave the oven door open for a while so the interior can dry completely before using it again.

Important Safety Tips

  • Always check your oven’s manufacturer’s cleaning instructions first.
  • Some ovens have special catalytic or self-cleaning surfaces that shouldn’t be scrubbed or treated with homemade cleaners.
  • Don’t apply cleaning mixtures to heating elements, electrical components, or gas openings.
  • Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaning chemicals.
  • Don’t turn the oven on while cleaning products or wet cleaning paste are still inside.

Keep Your Oven Cleaner for Longer

Once the oven is clean, wipe up fresh spills after the oven has cooled. A quick wipe every few uses can prevent grease from turning into the thick, baked-on layer that takes much longer to remove.
