- Wash the orange well. Since the peel is being used, scrub it thoroughly under running water.
- Prepare the ingredients. Peel the garlic, cut the onion into several pieces and slice the ginger. Cut the orange peel into smaller pieces.
- Add everything to a saucepan. Place the orange peel, garlic, onion and ginger in a pot with 3 cups of water.
- Bring to a boil. Once the water reaches a boil, reduce the heat.
- Simmer for about 10–15 minutes. This allows the flavors and aromas to infuse into the water.
- Strain the drink. Pour it through a fine strainer into a cup or glass and discard the solid ingredients.
- Serve warm. Allow it to cool slightly before drinking. If you prefer, a small amount of honey can be added for taste.
Orange peel contains aromatic compounds and flavonoids, while ginger, garlic and onion contain a variety of naturally occurring plant compounds. Together, they make a flavorful drink that can complement a healthy eating pattern.
However, this drink should not be presented as a treatment for diabetes, high cholesterol, infections, kidney disease, high blood pressure or other medical conditions. There is no good evidence that this combination “detoxes” the body or cures disease.
If you take medication—particularly blood thinners—or have a medical condition that affects your stomach, gallbladder, kidneys or liver, it is sensible to ask your healthcare professional before consuming large amounts of concentrated herbal preparations.
