MY WIFE GAVE BIRTH TO THE BABY WE HAD PRAYED FOR

Claire lowered her gaze.

Ronnie picked up her keys.

They didn’t need to.

“You didn’t lose me because Emily came back,” she said. “You lost my trust because you made sure she couldn’t.”

I drove her to the cafe two miles away.

Emily was sitting alone at a corner table, her hands tightly folded, staring at the door as though she had spent her whole life waiting for it to open.

When Ronnie entered, Emily slowly stood.

“You lost my trust because you made sure she couldn’t.”

“I never wanted to take you away from them,” Emily said, her voice breaking. “I only wanted you to know where you came from.”

“You wrote to me,” Ronnie whispered. “Every year.”

“Every single one.”

Ronnie crossed the room and folded herself into Emily’s arms. I stayed back and let them have the moment Claire had taken from all of us.

“Every single one.”

When we returned home, the guests were gone, and the lights hung over an empty, dark backyard.

Claire was waiting on the porch steps.

“I did it because I loved you,” she said. “Because I couldn’t lose you.”

“Your grief explains how it started,” I told her. “It doesn’t excuse eighteen years of it. You made me a stranger in my own family and called it protection.”

“So you’re leaving me,” Claire whispered.

“I did it because I loved you,”

“I don’t know what happens to us yet,” I said. “But I know what happens tonight.”

I pulled my keys from my pocket.

“I’m staying somewhere else.”

Claire’s face crumpled.

“And Ronnie decides what relationship she has with Emily. You don’t open her mail. You don’t hide her calls. You don’t decide when they see each other.”

“But I know what happens tonight.”

Ronnie looked at her mother.

“Not anymore.”

Claire sank onto the porch step.

For eighteen years, she had controlled the truth because she was terrified of losing her family.

Now that truth had cost her the right to control any of us.

“Not anymore.”
