MY WIFE GAVE BIRTH TO THE BABY WE HAD PRAYED FOR

  • by

After six miscarriages, my wife finally gave birth to the daughter we’d prayed for. I noticed something strange the moment I saw our baby, but I chose to love her without questions. Eighteen years later, she handed me a hidden letter and sobbed, “Dad, you have no idea what Mom did.”

The paper streamers were still swaying from the fence when the first cars turned onto our gravel driveway.

I stood in the backyard wearing a shirt Ronnie had chosen for me, watching balloons drift beneath a flawless blue sky.

Eighteen years.

My little girl was eighteen.

Six times, a doctor confirmed that my wife was pregnant.

Six times, our hearts shattered when Claire miscarried.

Then Claire became pregnant for the seventh time.

We prayed every day for a healthy child.

But the fear nearly destroyed me.

I slept in the guest room for most of the pregnancy so my snoring wouldn’t disturb Claire.

Her belly remained small throughout the pregnancy.

So small that it frightened me.

And she was frightened too. She wouldn’t let me touch her belly, afraid that even the pressure might somehow hurt the baby.

Then she called me at work one day.

“I gave birth,” she sobbed. “Our little girl is alive and healthy.”

I rushed straight to the hospital.

For eighteen years, my little girl had been my entire world.

I never could’ve imagined that everything I believed about my daughter was wrong.

“They’re here, Dad!” I heard Ronnie call from inside.

The side gate opened, and our first guests poured into the yard.

My brother carried a gift bag, two of Ronnie’s friends held wrapped presents, and our neighbor waved from behind them.

“Happy birthday!” someone shouted toward the house.

I laughed and directed them toward the tables.

That was when the scream came.

It tore through the kitchen window and left me frozen where I stood.

A second later, Ronnie rushed through the back door.

Her face was pale, tears streaked her cheeks, and she was clutching something white against her chest.

“Ronnie? Sweetheart, what happened?”

“Dad.” Her voice shook. “How could you let Mom do this?”

She looked past my shoulder.

I turned and saw Claire standing in the doorway, gripping the frame as though her legs could no longer support her.

“Please, Ronnie.” Claire’s voice cracked. “Don’t tell your father anything. Please.”

Ronnie’s jaw dropped.

“So you lied to him, too?”

For a moment, I wondered whether the suspicion I had carried all these years was finally about to be confirmed.

“Tell me what?” I stepped between them. “Somebody talk to me right now.”

The yard behind me had suddenly become silent.

I looked back.

My brother had stopped beside the gift table.

Ronnie’s friends were staring toward the porch.

Even the caterer stood motionless at the open gate.

Claire noticed them too.

“Not here,” she whispered. “Please.”

Ronnie gave a broken laugh.

“Why? Because people might finally find out?”

Claire gulped.

Whatever Ronnie had discovered, Claire was no longer afraid of only me hearing it.

She was afraid of everyone hearing it.

My heart sank.

Ronnie looked at the people behind me, then turned back toward Claire.

“Fine,” she said. “Let’s start with the first lie.”

She pressed a worn envelope against my chest.

“You’re not my biological father.”

For a second, everything around me seemed to freeze.

I looked at Claire.
