Part 1: The Name That Destroyed My World
“The woman with your husband is Jennifer Ramirez.”
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Jennifer.
My best friend for thirteen years.
The woman who had held my hand through two miscarriages. The woman who had flown across the country to sit beside me in a hospital room when I thought my life was falling apart. The woman who had promised me that I would never have to face motherhood alone.
I stared at the nurse.
“No,” I whispered. “There must be a mistake.”
The nurse’s expression softened.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Peterson. That’s the name on her identification.”
I pressed one hand against my pregnant belly.
My baby moved.
That tiny movement brought me back to reality.
I was thirty-three weeks pregnant. I needed to stay calm, no matter what I discovered behind that emergency department curtain.
“Is my husband conscious?” I asked.
“Not yet. The doctors are examining him.”
“And Jennifer?”
“She is awake. She’s being evaluated in another room.”
I nodded slowly.
Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me since I received the police call.
“Was she the person who called for help?”
The nurse hesitated.
“No. A hotel employee found them.”
Something about that answer bothered me.
If Jennifer had been with my husband when he collapsed, why hadn’t she called for help herself?
Before I could ask anything else, a doctor approached.
“Mrs. Peterson? I’m Dr. Hayes. Your husband is stable, but we need to run additional tests. He appears to have suffered a sudden medical episode.”
“What happened to him?”
“We’re still investigating the cause. I don’t want to speculate before we have the results.”
I swallowed hard.
“Can I see him?”
“In a few minutes. But first, I need to ask you something. Has your husband ever experienced unexplained fainting, chest pain, or neurological symptoms?”
“No.”
“Has he been taking any new medications?”
“Not that I know of.”
The doctor glanced toward the nurses’ station.
“Someone mentioned that there may have been an argument at the hotel before he collapsed. We are trying to establish what happened.”
An argument.
I looked down at my phone.
Jennifer’s TikTok video was still open.
The video showed her standing in an elegant hotel suite, smiling at the camera while the Boston skyline glittered behind her.
I had watched it earlier without thinking twice.
Now I noticed something I hadn’t noticed before.
In the reflection of the window, there was a man’s silhouette.
I enlarged the image.
My stomach tightened.
The man was wearing a dark watch with a silver band.
Gabriel wore the same watch.
It had been my anniversary gift to him two years earlier.
I stared at the screen until my eyes blurred.
Then I heard a familiar voice behind me.
“Camila?”
I turned.
Jennifer stood several feet away, wearing a black dress and a pale coat. Her makeup had smudged beneath her eyes, and her hands were trembling.
For thirteen years, I had known every expression on that woman’s face.
I knew how she looked when she was happy.
I knew how she looked when she was frightened.
And I knew how she looked when she was lying.
At that moment, she looked terrified.
“Camila, please,” she whispered. “You have to let me explain.”
I stared at her.
“Explain what?”
She glanced toward the corridor.
“Not here.”
I almost laughed.
Not here?
My husband had been found unconscious in a luxury hotel with my pregnant best friend’s name on the incident report, and she wanted privacy?
“Tell me one thing, Jennifer.”
She looked at me.
“Why were you with my husband?”
Her lips parted.
No answer came.
Then she began to cry.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.”
Those words were all I needed to hear.
I stepped back as though she had struck me.
“You didn’t mean for what to happen? The affair? The lies? Or whatever happened in that hotel bathroom?”
Jennifer covered her face.
“Please. I never wanted to hurt you.”
I looked at the woman who had once promised to be the godmother of my child.
“You should have thought about that before you betrayed me.”
Then I turned away.
But before I could reach the corridor, Jennifer grabbed my sleeve.
“There is something you don’t know about Gabriel.”
I pulled my arm free.
“I don’t want to hear another lie.”
“It’s not about the affair.”
Her voice cracked.
“It’s about your baby.”
I froze.
Every muscle in my body seemed to tighten at once.
“What did you just say?”
Jennifer looked at my belly, then back at me.
“Camila, please. Whatever you think happened tonight, you need to speak to Gabriel before you make any decisions.”
I stared at her in disbelief.
“Why would anything that happened tonight have anything to do with my baby?”
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, a nurse hurried toward us.
“Mrs. Peterson? Your husband is awake. He keeps asking for you.”
I looked at Jennifer one last time.
Her expression had changed.
She wasn’t simply afraid of being exposed anymore.
She looked as though she knew something terrible was about to happen.
I followed the nurse toward Gabriel’s room.
And as I approached the curtain, I heard my husband say something that made my blood run cold.
“Please don’t let Camila see the messages.”
Part 2: The Messages on His Phone
I stopped outside the curtain.
The nurse looked at me.
“Mrs. Peterson?”
I forced myself to move.
Inside, Gabriel was lying on a hospital bed with an intravenous line in his arm. His face looked pale, and a monitor beside him recorded his heartbeat.
When he saw me, his expression changed immediately.
“Camila.”
I stood at the foot of the bed.
“What happened?”
He swallowed.
“I don’t remember everything.”
“That’s interesting.”
He frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means the police found you in a hotel bathroom with Jennifer, and now you’re telling the nurse not to let me see your messages.”
His face drained of color.
“Who told you that?”
“Does it matter?”
He tried to sit up, but the doctor entered and instructed him to remain still.
“Mr. Peterson, you need to rest. We are still evaluating your condition.”
Gabriel barely seemed to hear him.
“Camila, please. Let me explain.”
I crossed my arms.
“I’m listening.”
He looked toward the door.
“Jennifer and I met because she had something important to tell me.”
“What could she possibly have to tell you that required a hotel room?”
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he might finally tell the truth.
Instead, he whispered, “It wasn’t what you think.”
I had heard those words too many times in stories about unfaithful husbands.
I had never imagined hearing them from mine.
“Then what was it?”
He didn’t answer.
I took out my phone.
“I’m going to ask you one last time. Why were you with Jennifer?”
His voice became defensive.
“She contacted me about something personal. We met to talk. Then I suddenly felt dizzy. The next thing I remember is waking up here.”
“Why did she tell me I needed to speak to you about our baby?”
Gabriel stared at me.
“What?”
“She said you had something to tell me. Something involving our child.”
He looked genuinely startled.
Then fear crossed his face.
“Camila, you need to promise me something.”
“No.”
“Please.”
“You don’t get to ask me for promises while refusing to answer my questions.”
He gripped the blanket.
“If anything happens to me, you have to protect the baby.”
My heart began pounding.
“What are you talking about?”
“I need you to listen.”
He glanced toward the doctor, who had stepped outside to speak with another nurse.
Then Gabriel lowered his voice.
“Three weeks ago, I received some medical test results.”
I stared at him.
“What results?”
“Something isn’t right with my health.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t know how serious it was.”
“What does that have to do with Jennifer?”
He looked away.
“She helped me arrange the appointment.”
I felt a fresh wave of confusion.
“Jennifer arranged a medical appointment for you?”
“Yes.”
“And you couldn’t tell your own wife?”
“I was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
He opened his mouth, but the doctor returned.
“Mr. Peterson, we need to continue your evaluation. Your wife can stay for a few minutes, but you need to avoid unnecessary stress.”
I almost laughed at the irony.
Unnecessary stress.
My marriage was collapsing, my best friend had been found with my husband, and now Gabriel was suggesting that a secret medical problem explained everything.
I wasn’t ready to believe him.
As the doctor checked the monitor, Gabriel reached for my hand.
I stepped away.
“Don’t touch me until you tell me the truth.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know I deserve that.”
I turned toward the door.
“Camila,” he called.
I stopped without looking back.
“There is a file in my office safe. The combination is your birthday.”
I slowly turned around.
“What file?”
“Everything you need to understand.”
“Why didn’t you give it to me before?”
He stared at the ceiling.
“Because I was trying to find a way to fix it without destroying your life.”
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I left.
Outside the room, Jennifer was sitting alone in a chair, her hands clasped tightly together.
When she saw me, she stood.
“Did he tell you?”
“No.”
She nodded sadly, as though she had expected that answer.
“Then you need to see the file.”
I stared at her.
“Why do you know about it?”
She wiped her eyes.
“Because I was the one who found out what was happening.”
I felt the ground shift beneath me.
“Jennifer, what exactly have you done?”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Something I should have told you weeks ago.”
Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.
Inside was a laboratory report bearing Gabriel’s name.
I looked at the first page.
And suddenly, the possibility of an affair became only one of the problems I needed to understand.
