Many People Don’t Know the Small Round Hole on Nail Clippers Has a Useful Purpose

  • by

Have you ever looked closely at a nail clipper and noticed the tiny round hole near the end of the metal lever?

Most people assume it’s simply part of the manufacturing design or an insignificant detail. In fact, on many traditional nail clippers, that little opening has a practical purpose.

What Is the Small Hole For?

The small round hole is commonly associated with the pivot and assembly of the nail clipper’s lever.

A typical nail clipper consists of two cutting blades, a pivoting mechanism, and a lever. The lever is attached to the clipper through a small post or pin, allowing it to move and create the force needed to bring the cutting blades together.

The hole in the lever allows it to fit over this mechanism.

How Does a Nail Clipper Work?

Although a nail clipper looks simple, it uses a basic mechanical principle.

When you press down on the lever, the lever transfers and amplifies the force you apply.

That force moves the cutting section of the clipper together, allowing the blades to cut the nail cleanly.

The small components around the hole help the lever remain properly positioned while it moves.

It’s Part of the Lever Mechanism

Look closely at the end of the clipper and you’ll usually see a small post or pin.

The lever sits around this point.

When you lift the lever, you position it for use. When you press it downward, the lever pushes the upper cutting section toward the lower section.

This simple design is why such a small tool can cut through a relatively hard fingernail with very little effort.
