How to Stop Maggots From Taking Over Your Trash Bin

  • by

If you have a small amount of meat or fish waste and your local waste system allows it, one practical option is to keep the scraps sealed in a bag in the freezer until garbage collection day.

This prevents the waste from decomposing in the outdoor bin and makes it much less attractive to flies.

9. Don’t Rely on Bleach or Harsh Chemicals

You don’t necessarily need strong chemicals to clean a trash bin.

A thorough wash with hot water and detergent is often enough for routine cleaning.

If you choose to use a disinfectant, follow the product label carefully and never mix bleach with ammonia, acids, vinegar, or other cleaning products, because dangerous gases can form.

10. Deal With the Source

If maggots keep returning even after cleaning the bin, look for the source.

Check for:

  • A leaking garbage bag
  • Food trapped beneath the bin
  • Waste stuck underneath the lid
  • An improperly sealed food container
  • Dead animals or other organic material nearby
  • A damaged garbage container

Simply killing the visible maggots won’t solve the problem if flies continue to have access to food and moisture.

A Simple Prevention Routine

To keep your trash bin cleaner:

Bag food waste → tie bags securely → keep the lid closed → avoid leaking liquids → clean the bin regularly → keep it dry.

This routine removes many of the conditions flies need to lay eggs.

One More Important Tip

Don’t leave full garbage bags sitting around for days when they contain meat, fish, or other highly perishable food waste. Put them out according to your local collection schedule and keep the area around your bin clean.

Maggots aren’t necessarily a sign that your entire home is dirty. They’re usually a sign that flies have found accessible organic material.

Remove the food source, clean the bin thoroughly, keep it dry, and make it difficult for flies to get inside—and the problem becomes much easier to control.
