Few things are more unpleasant than opening your trash bin and discovering it is covered with maggots. The good news is that you can usually prevent the problem by making the bin less attractive to flies and keeping food waste properly contained.
Maggots are fly larvae. They commonly appear when adult flies find suitable food and moisture for laying eggs, particularly around meat scraps, fish, dairy products, and other decomposing organic waste.
Here is a simple step-by-step approach to getting rid of them and preventing them from coming back.
1. Empty the Bin Completely
Start by removing all trash from the bin.
Tie garbage bags tightly before taking them outside, particularly if they contain food scraps or other material that can attract flies.
Check around the bottom, sides, lid, and wheels because small pieces of food can become trapped in these areas.
2. Remove the Maggots
If maggots are visible inside the empty bin, you can flush them away with very hot water.
Pour the water carefully over the affected areas, allowing it to reach cracks and corners where larvae may be hiding.
Be careful when handling hot water to avoid burns.
3. Wash the Trash Bin Thoroughly
