How to Clean a Dirty Stove: Easy Step-by-Step Method

  • by

Make sure all burners are turned off.

Allow the stovetop to cool completely before beginning. Never pour cold liquids onto a very hot stovetop.

Step 2: Remove the Parts

Carefully remove the:

  • Burner grates
  • Burner caps
  • Removable knobs, if appropriate for your stove

Set them aside for separate cleaning.

Step 3: Soak the Removable Parts

Fill a sink or large basin with warm water and add several drops of dish soap.

Place the removable grates and burner caps into the water and allow them to soak for 15–30 minutes.

For heavier grease, give them additional soaking time.

Step 4: Remove Loose Debris

Before applying any cleaning solution to the stovetop, use a dry paper towel or soft cloth to remove loose crumbs and pieces of food.

This prevents you from spreading the grime around.

Step 5: Apply Baking Soda

Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the greasy and burned areas.

Concentrate on spots with stubborn food residue.

Step 6: Add Vinegar Carefully

Lightly spray or drizzle a small amount of white vinegar over the baking soda.

The mixture will fizz as the two ingredients react.

Let it sit for approximately 5–10 minutes.

Keep in mind that vinegar and baking soda mainly create a fizzing reaction and partially neutralize each other, so don’t rely on the mixture as a powerful chemical cleaner. The combination can still help loosen some surface grime, but dish soap is particularly useful for cutting through grease.

Step 7: Scrub Gently

Use a non-scratch sponge to work over the dirty areas.

For stubborn residue, use a soft brush or old toothbrush around corners and edges.

Avoid steel wool or harsh abrasive pads, especially on stainless steel or coated surfaces, because they can leave scratches.

Step 8: Wipe the Surface
