A bright, clean smile is something many people want, which is why homemade teeth-whitening tricks spread so quickly online. One viral image claims that a simple mixture of lemon and baking soda can kill bacteria, remove enamel stains, restore enamel, and turn yellow teeth dramatically white in less than an hour.
The before-and-after pictures certainly look impressive. But there is an important problem with this claim: lemon juice and baking soda cannot restore damaged tooth enamel, and using acidic ingredients directly on teeth can actually contribute to enamel erosion.
If you’re looking for a brighter smile, understanding what causes yellow teeth—and what can safely improve their appearance—is much more useful than relying on a two-minute “kitchen blast.”
Why Do Teeth Become Yellow?
Teeth naturally change color over time. Some people have naturally darker or more yellowish teeth because the underlying dentin has a yellow tone and becomes more visible as enamel changes with age.
External stains can also develop from foods and drinks such as:
- Coffee
- Tea
- Red wine
- Dark-colored sauces
- Certain strongly pigmented foods
- Tobacco
Plaque and tartar buildup can also make teeth appear darker or less clean.
Not every type of discoloration can be removed with a home remedy, however. Some stains are located deeper within the tooth and require professional assessment.
