Celery has become a popular ingredient in homemade juices and wellness drinks, often promoted as a powerful “detox” food that can cleanse the blood, skin, kidneys, liver, and pancreas all at once.
Celery is certainly a nutritious vegetable, but the idea that one glass of celery juice can cleanse all of these organs in one stroke is an exaggeration. Your liver and kidneys already perform important filtration and waste-removal functions, and there is no good evidence that celery juice can flush toxins from all of these organs.
That doesn’t mean celery isn’t worth eating. It provides water, fiber when consumed whole, vitamin K, potassium, and other plant compounds, making it a useful addition to a balanced diet.
Fresh Celery Green Juice
Ingredients
- 4–5 fresh celery stalks
- ½ cucumber
- 1 small green apple
- A handful of fresh parsley
- ½ lemon
- 1 small piece of fresh ginger
- ½–1 cup cold water
- Ice, optional
Instructions
- Wash the celery, cucumber, apple, parsley, and ginger thoroughly.
- Cut the celery and cucumber into smaller pieces.
- Remove the apple core and cut the apple into chunks.
- Add everything to a blender.
- Pour in the cold water.
- Blend until smooth.
- Add the lemon juice and blend briefly again.
- Drink immediately, or strain it if you prefer a thinner texture.
For more fiber, do not strain the juice. Blending the ingredients and keeping the pulp makes the drink more filling and preserves more of the natural fiber.
