ALAN SUDDENLY FOUND MY CAREER INTERESTING
Near the end of dinner, Ryan found me by the coat check.
“I’m sorry.”
“For recognizing me?”
“For saying too much.”
“You didn’t.”
He hesitated.
“There’s something else you should know.”
My attention sharpened immediately.
“Your stepfather asked me about you before tonight.”
“What did he ask?”
Ryan glanced toward the dining room.
“He wanted to know whether your position could help his company with a federal logistics contract.”
For a moment, every sound around me seemed to fade.
Alan had mocked and dismissed my career for years.
But apparently, the moment he believed my name might benefit his company, my work became interesting.
“What did you tell him?”
“That he should speak to you directly.”
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
“He said there was no point because you were basically administrative.”
I looked through the doorway.
Alan was laughing with Martin Cole, the same man who had treated my career as barely worth mentioning earlier that evening.
That was when I realized something important.
My family was not simply discovering they had underestimated me.
They were already wondering how they might use what they had discovered.
PART 6: THE VISIT TO MY HOTEL
By the time I returned to my hotel, I had nine messages from Mom.
I ignored all of them.
Then Lily texted.
Please answer.
Not Mom.
Me.
So I called her.
“Are you leaving?” she asked.
“No.”
“I thought you might skip the wedding.”
“I’m angry with the family, Lily. I’m not angry enough with you to punish you on your wedding day.”
There was a pause.
“Not angry enough?”
“No.”
“I deserve that,” she whispered.
That surprised me.
She began remembering things she had ignored over the years.
The promotion I had tried to tell everyone about before Mom changed the subject.
The family visits where Lily spent hours discussing wedding plans without once asking why I had flown in from another country.
Then she said,
“Mom and Alan are fighting downstairs.”
“About me?”
“About everything. Alan wants you to meet one of his business partners tomorrow morning.”
“No.”
“I know. I already told him no.”
I gave Lily exact language to repeat.
Alan had no permission to imply that I had endorsed, reviewed, recommended, supported, or participated in anything involving his company.
The next morning at seven, Mom knocked on my hotel-room door.
“We need to talk.”
She walked in and immediately began the way she always did.
“You eat terribly when you travel.”
“Why are you here?”
“What happened last night was unnecessary.”
“What part?”
“Ryan creating that whole scene.”
“Ryan recognized a superior officer.”
Then Mom tried to turn everything into my fault for never including her in my life.
I reminded her that I had told her about promotions.
Assignments.
Travel.
Work.
She simply had never listened.
Eventually, the real reason for her visit appeared.
“Alan has one small request.”
I actually laughed.
“He just wants you to have coffee with somebody.”
“No.”
“You could help this family for once.”
That sentence changed everything.
For once.
I thought about the flights I had paid for.
The money I had quietly sent.
The leave I had taken whenever Mom needed help.
The holidays I rearranged.
Apparently none of it counted because none of it helped Alan right now.
“Leave,” I said.
PART 7: THE WEDDING WENT ON ANYWAY
Three hours later, I arrived at Lily’s bridal suite.
She was sitting in front of the mirror while a stylist pinned tiny white flowers into her hair.
She looked beautiful.
She also looked furious.
Not with me.
With Mom.
“Did she ask you about Alan’s contract?”
“Yes.”
“I told her not to.”
Then Lily took my hand.
“There’s something else.”
I looked at her.
“Alan already used your name.”
My stomach tightened.
