But I wasn’t going to collapse in that hallway.
Six weeks earlier, I had noticed inconsistencies in his stories. Unexplained withdrawals, strange hotel charges, and phone calls that abruptly ended whenever I entered the room.
At first, I had blamed stress.
Then I found a receipt from a private maternity clinic tucked inside his jacket.
When I questioned him, he claimed it belonged to a business associate.
I wanted to believe him.
But something inside me refused to ignore the evidence.
That’s why I had hired a private investigator.
I hadn’t told Adrian because I wanted facts, not another argument filled with excuses.
And that morning, I had brought my phone with me for a reason.
The recording was already running.
Adrian glanced at the device in my hand.
“Are you recording me?”
I didn’t answer.
Instead, I asked Maren a question.
“When is your baby due?”
She wiped her cheeks.
“In about two weeks.”
I felt a chill move through me.
Two weeks.
Adrian had spent the last month telling me that he couldn’t take time off work because his company was preparing for an important financial audit.
Apparently, he had found time for something else.
The nurse returned with a wheelchair.
“Maren, we’re going to take you in for an assessment. Sir, are you coming with her?”
Adrian looked at Maren.
Then he looked at me.
For the first time since I’d known him, he seemed genuinely unable to decide what to do.
Maren took a shaky breath.
“Adrian, tell her the truth.”
He closed his eyes.
“Hannah, I’m sorry.”
I shook my head.
“Sorry for what? The affair? The lies? Or the fact that I caught you?”
He didn’t answer.
Then Maren spoke again.
“He told me you knew.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“He said you’d agreed to the arrangement. He told me you were only staying together until the baby was born because of the house and your finances.”
I felt as though the floor had shifted beneath my feet.
An arrangement?
I had never agreed to anything of the sort.
Before I could respond, the nurse returned with Maren’s medical file.
She checked the information, looked at Adrian, and frowned.
“Sir, I need to clarify something about the patient’s emergency contact and the information provided during registration.”
Adrian went completely still.
The nurse continued.
“You’re listed as the baby’s father, but the details you’ve provided don’t match the information in the patient’s existing records. We need to speak with the attending physician before making any changes.”
Maren looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
The nurse closed the file.
“It means the doctor needs to verify the information with you privately.”
Adrian’s face had turned pale.
I watched him carefully.
His reaction wasn’t the expression of a man who had merely been caught cheating.
He looked terrified of what might happen next.
At that moment, my phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from the private investigator.
Hannah, I need you to remain calm. I’ve found something important about Adrian’s financial records. It changes everything. Call me as soon as you can.
I read the message twice.
Then I looked up at my husband.
“Adrian, before you say another word, I think you should know something.”
He swallowed.
“What?”
I held up my phone.
“The truth has a way of coming out, even when someone spends a year trying to bury it.”
His eyes widened.
For the first time that morning, I saw genuine fear replace the excuses in his expression.
And as the nurse wheeled Maren toward the examination room, I realized that the secret behind my husband’s double life might be far more serious than an affair.
I stepped away from him and called my investigator.
Because whatever Adrian had been hiding, I was finally ready to hear the truth.
And I had a feeling that when the next piece of evidence came to light, none of us would ever look at him the same way again.
