Aloe Vera: Preparation, Traditional Uses, and Potential Health Benefits

  • by

Rinse the leaf thoroughly under clean running water to remove dirt and surface residue. Place it on a clean cutting board.

Step 2: Remove the Spiny Edges

Carefully trim away the pointed edges on both sides of the leaf using a clean knife.

Step 3: Drain the Yellow Sap

Cut the base of the leaf and allow the yellow sap to drain away. This liquid, known as aloe latex, contains compounds such as aloin that can cause severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea when swallowed.

Do not consume the yellow sap.

Step 4: Remove the Green Skin

Carefully peel away the outer green layer to expose the clear inner gel. Avoid including the green rind or yellow latex.

Step 5: Collect the Clear Gel

Scoop out the transparent gel with a clean spoon and place it in a clean container. Discard any portions that are discolored or contaminated.

Step 6: Use It Carefully

If you intend to use the gel on your skin, choose a commercially prepared product designed for topical use when possible. Fresh aloe can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people, so test a small area first and stop if irritation develops.

Never put homemade aloe gel directly into your eyes. It is not a sterile eye treatment and may cause irritation or contamination.

What Does Science Say About Aloe Vera?

Skin care: Some aloe vera products may help soothe minor skin irritation, although the evidence varies by condition. Serious burns, infected wounds, and persistent skin problems require medical advice.

Digestive health: Oral aloe products differ considerably in composition. Aloe latex can cause diarrhea, dehydration, and electrolyte disturbances, so homemade aloe preparations should not be swallowed.

Cancer research: Some aloe compounds have been studied in laboratory experiments, but there is no convincing clinical evidence that drinking aloe vera or applying its gel cures cancer.

Eye health: Aloe vera has not been established as a treatment for cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disease, or other causes of vision loss. Proper eye examinations and evidence-based treatments are essential.

Important Warning Signs

Seek prompt medical assessment for unexplained lumps, unusual bleeding, persistent symptoms, or suspected cancer. Sudden vision loss, a sudden curtain or shadow across your vision, or severe eye pain requires emergency eye care.

Final Thoughts

Aloe vera can be a useful ingredient in certain skincare products, but claims that it eliminates every cancer cell or prevents blindness are unsupported. The safest approach is to use appropriate aloe products for their intended purpose and rely on proven medical treatments for serious illnesses.

Healthy eating, avoiding tobacco, attending recommended cancer screenings, and obtaining regular eye examinations are more reliable ways to support long-term health than relying on a miracle recipe.
