A Simple Evening Drink for Men Experiencing Urinary Symptoms

  • by

Waking several times during the night to urinate can be frustrating and can leave you feeling tired the following day. For many men over 50, these changes can occur alongside an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

A drink before bed cannot treat or shrink an enlarged prostate overnight, and there is no single homemade recipe proven to restore urinary flow immediately. However, a simple, low-sugar drink can be part of a healthy routine while you address the underlying cause of urinary symptoms.

One gentle option is a warm ginger and lemon drink.

To prepare it, heat one cup of water until warm but not boiling. Add a few thin slices of fresh ginger and allow them to steep for approximately 5–10 minutes. Remove the ginger, allow the drink to cool slightly, and add a small squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

If you prefer a sweeter taste, use only a small amount of honey. Keeping the drink low in sugar is preferable, especially for people who are monitoring their blood glucose or calorie intake.

Because drinking a large glass immediately before sleeping can itself increase nighttime urination, consider having the drink earlier in the evening rather than immediately before getting into bed.

Men with nighttime urination may also find it helpful to reduce large amounts of fluid during the few hours before bedtime. Caffeine and alcohol in the evening can also worsen urinary frequency in some people.

Persistent weak urine flow, difficulty starting urination, frequent nighttime urination, urgency, dribbling, or a sensation that the bladder does not empty completely should not simply be treated with a home drink. These symptoms can occur with an enlarged prostate, but they can also have other causes.

A healthcare professional can assess the symptoms and determine whether prostate enlargement is actually responsible. Depending on the situation, evaluation may include a medical history, physical examination, urine testing, prostate assessment, and other tests when appropriate.

There are effective medical treatments for bothersome BPH symptoms, including prescription medications and procedures for men whose symptoms are more severe. The appropriate treatment depends on the size of the prostate, severity of symptoms, overall health, and individual circumstances.

Certain symptoms require prompt medical attention. If you suddenly cannot urinate at all, develop severe lower-abdominal pain, notice blood in your urine, or develop fever and painful urination, seek medical care promptly.

A warm ginger-and-lemon drink can be a pleasant addition to an evening routine, but it should not be presented as a treatment that shrinks the prostate or permanently restores urinary flow. For men whose sleep is repeatedly interrupted by bathroom trips, finding and treating the underlying cause is the most important step.
