Coffee With Garlic: An Unusual Homemade Drink Worth Trying

  • by

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, while garlic is a familiar ingredient in kitchens everywhere. Combining the two may sound unusual, but some people enjoy experimenting with bold flavors and traditional homemade drinks.

Garlic coffee is not a proven medical treatment, but it can be prepared as an interesting twist on an ordinary cup of coffee. If you are curious about the combination, here is a simple step-by-step method.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup freshly brewed coffee
  • 1 small fresh garlic clove
  • ½ teaspoon honey, optional
  • A small pinch of cinnamon, optional
  • Milk or plant-based milk, optional

Step 1: Prepare the Garlic

Peel one small garlic clove and rinse it.

For a milder flavor, use only half a clove. Garlic has a strong taste, so starting with a small amount is recommended.

Step 2: Crush the Garlic

Place the garlic on a cutting board and gently crush it with the flat side of a knife.

Finely mince it afterward. Crushing the garlic releases its natural compounds and allows its flavor to blend more easily with the coffee.

Step 3: Prepare Your Coffee

Brew one cup of your favorite coffee using your normal method.

You can use instant coffee, filtered coffee, French press coffee, or espresso diluted with hot water.

Step 4: Combine the Ingredients

Place the crushed garlic into the hot coffee.

Stir thoroughly for about 30 seconds.

If the garlic flavor is too strong, strain the drink through a fine strainer before serving.

Step 5: Add Honey or Cinnamon

For a smoother flavor, add ½ teaspoon of honey.

A small pinch of cinnamon can also help balance the strong garlic flavor and give the drink a warmer aroma.

Avoid adding large amounts of sweetener if you are trying to keep the drink low in sugar.

Step 6: Let It Rest Briefly

Allow the coffee to sit for approximately 1–2 minutes before drinking.

This gives the flavors time to blend.

Step 7: Enjoy It Warm

Drink the coffee slowly while it is warm.

Because both coffee and garlic can be irritating for some people, you may prefer to enjoy a small serving first rather than drinking a large amount at once.

A Gentler Version

If straight garlic coffee is too strong, try making a garlic-infused coffee instead.

Simply simmer ½ small garlic clove in a little water for 2–3 minutes, strain the liquid, and add a small amount of it to your freshly brewed coffee.

This produces a much milder garlic flavor.

When Is the Best Time to Drink It?

Because coffee contains caffeine, it is generally better enjoyed earlier in the day rather than immediately before bedtime.

People who are sensitive to caffeine may experience nervousness, heartburn, or difficulty sleeping, so the amount and timing should be adjusted accordingly.

What Are the Benefits?

Garlic contains naturally occurring sulfur compounds and other plant compounds, while coffee contains caffeine and antioxidant compounds. Both foods can be part of a balanced diet.

However, there is no good evidence that adding garlic to coffee creates a special medicine, dramatically improves circulation, or treats infections or other diseases. It should be viewed as a food-and-flavor experiment rather than a replacement for prescribed treatment.

Important Tips

Garlic coffee isn’t for everyone. Garlic may cause heartburn, stomach discomfort, bad breath, or digestive irritation in some people. Coffee can also worsen reflux or cause jitteriness in sensitive individuals.

If you take medications—particularly medicines that affect blood clotting—or have a medical condition affected by caffeine or garlic, check with a healthcare professional before making concentrated garlic drinks a regular habit.

For most people, the simplest approach is to start with a very small amount of garlic and see how your body responds.

A cup of coffee is already a familiar daily ritual. Adding a tiny amount of garlic creates a surprisingly bold combination that may be worth experimenting with if you enjoy unusual flavors.
