Onion has long been used in traditional hair-care routines, and onion-based preparations are especially popular among people looking for simple homemade ways to care for their scalp and hair. The image shows an onion-based mixture being applied along the scalp as a hair-coloring oil.
However, it is important to set realistic expectations: there is no reliable evidence that onion oil can permanently reverse gray hair or turn gray hair black within five minutes. Gray hair is usually related to reduced melanin production in the hair follicle, and homemade oils cannot reliably restore that pigment.
If you still want to try an onion-based hair treatment as a cosmetic scalp-care routine, here is a simple method.
Ingredients
- 1 medium red onion
- ½ cup coconut oil or olive oil
- 1 teaspoon castor oil, optional
- 1 teaspoon black seed oil, optional
- A clean glass jar
- Fine strainer or cheesecloth
Step 1: Prepare the Onion
Peel one medium onion and rinse it thoroughly.
Cut the onion into small pieces so that more of its natural compounds can be released during preparation.
Step 2: Extract the Onion Juice
Place the chopped onion in a blender and blend until it becomes a smooth pulp.
Transfer the pulp to a clean piece of cheesecloth or a fine strainer and squeeze out as much juice as possible.
Set the juice aside.
Step 3: Warm the Oil
Pour ½ cup of coconut or olive oil into a small saucepan.
Add the onion pieces that remain after extracting the juice.
Warm the mixture over very low heat for approximately 10–15 minutes. Avoid frying or burning the onion.
The goal is to gently infuse the oil rather than cook it aggressively.
Step 4: Strain the Oil
Allow the mixture to cool.
Strain the oil carefully through a fine strainer or cheesecloth to remove all onion pieces.
If desired, mix in a small amount of castor oil or black seed oil after the mixture has cooled.
Step 5: Perform a Patch Test
Before applying the oil to your entire scalp, place a small amount on an inconspicuous area of skin.
Wait at least several hours.
If you experience burning, significant redness, swelling, itching, or irritation, wash the area and do not use the preparation.
Step 6: Apply to the Scalp
Part your hair into several sections.
Using your fingertips, apply a small amount of the oil directly to the scalp.
Massage gently for 5–10 minutes using circular movements.
Do not scratch the scalp or use excessive pressure.
Step 7: Leave It on
Leave the oil on for approximately 30–60 minutes.
You do not need to leave it overnight, especially if your skin is sensitive.
If irritation develops, rinse it off immediately.
Step 8: Wash Your Hair
Wash your hair thoroughly with a mild shampoo.
Because onion has a strong smell, you may need to shampoo twice.
Finish with your usual conditioner if your hair feels dry.
How Often Can You Use It?
If your scalp tolerates the treatment, you could use it once or twice a week as a cosmetic hair-care routine.
Consistency is more important than using a large amount of oil.
What Can This Treatment Actually Do?
Onion-based hair treatments may make the scalp and hair feel conditioned because they are combined with moisturizing oils. Some people also enjoy scalp massage because it can feel relaxing.
But claims that this preparation permanently eliminates gray hair, restores youthful black hair in five minutes, or reverses aging of the hair follicle are not scientifically established.
If you suddenly develop a large amount of gray hair, experience significant hair loss, or notice changes in your scalp, it is worth discussing the cause with a dermatologist. Nutritional deficiencies and certain medical conditions can sometimes contribute to premature graying or hair changes.
