Why Does Your Heel Hurt When You Wake Up? Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Ways to Find Relief

  • by

Heel pain that appears when you get out of bed in the morning can be surprisingly uncomfortable. You may take your first steps and feel a sharp, stabbing sensation beneath your heel. After walking for several minutes, the pain may begin to ease, only to return after sitting for a long time or standing for hours.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Morning heel pain is a common complaint, and one of its most frequent causes is a condition called plantar fasciitis. However, other problems involving the tendons, nerves, joints, or bones can also cause discomfort.

Understanding the possible causes of heel pain can help you choose appropriate treatment and recognize when it is time to seek medical attention.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

One of the most common causes of pain beneath the heel is plantar fasciitis.

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to the front of your foot. It helps support your arch and absorbs some of the forces created when you walk, run, or stand.

When this tissue becomes irritated, it can cause pain around the bottom of the heel.

The discomfort is often most noticeable during the first steps after waking up or after sitting for an extended period.

During rest, the affected tissue may become less flexible. When you suddenly put weight on your foot, the tissue experiences tension, which can trigger pain.

Plantar fasciitis is particularly common among people who spend long hours standing, increase their walking or running activity suddenly, or wear shoes that provide insufficient support.
