PART 2 — The Fifth Cry

  • by

At 4:23 that morning, Brad thought he had already witnessed the most unbelievable moment of his life.

Four babies.

Four tiny cries.

Four little faces wrapped in blankets.

He stood beside his wife, Emma, completely overwhelmed.

Doctors moved around the room while nurses checked each newborn.

Brad kept counting them.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Then suddenly, one of the nurses stopped.

“Wait.”

The room became strangely quiet.

She looked toward the bassinet.

Then toward the doctor.

“Doctor… I think we need to check again.”

Brad frowned.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered immediately.

The doctor looked at the monitors, then at the mother.

“Her vital signs are changing.”

Brad’s smile disappeared.

“What does that mean?”

The doctor moved quickly toward the bed.

“We’re going to examine her again.”

Brad took his wife’s hand.

“Emma?”

Her eyes slowly opened.

“Are the babies okay?”

“They’re perfect,” Brad whispered.

Then he heard something.

A faint sound.

Not from the four bassinets.

From somewhere behind him.

A tiny cry.

Brad turned around.

One of the nurses was standing beside another bassinet.

She looked stunned.

“Doctor…”

The cry came again.

Everyone in the room froze.

Brad stared.

“What’s happening?”

The doctor walked over.

Then he looked back at Brad.

“Your wife was carrying five babies.”

Brad’s mouth fell open.

“What?”

The doctor smiled.

“Five.”

Brad counted the bassinets again.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Then five.

He covered his face with both hands.

“Oh my God.”

Emma started laughing through her tears.

“Five?”

The doctor nodded.

“The fifth baby was positioned behind the others, which is why the delivery was more complicated than expected.”

Brad walked toward the bassinet.

A tiny baby girl was lying there, blinking beneath her pink cap.

He touched her hand with one finger.

She immediately wrapped her tiny fingers around it.

Brad began crying.

“I thought there were four.”

The nurse smiled.

“So did everyone else.”

Brad looked at his wife.

“You gave me five.”

Emma laughed softly.

“No…”

She looked toward the babies.

“We gave each other five.”

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

There were only five tiny cries filling the room.

Five little heartbeats.

Five new lives.

And one exhausted mother who had somehow brought all of them into the world.

Brad later said he would never forget 4:23 in the morning.

Not because it was the moment he became a father.

But because it was the moment he discovered that sometimes life has one more surprise waiting after you think you’ve already received everything.

And when the nurse finally placed the fifth baby beside her siblings, Brad leaned over the bassinets and whispered:

“I’m going to need a bigger house.”

Emma laughed.

“You’re going to need five times the diapers.”

Brad looked at all five babies.

Then smiled through his tears.

“Worth every one.”
