A Simple Honey and Ginger Drink for Everyday

  • by

A swollen area around the neck can be worrying, especially when it is associated with the thyroid gland. Although traditional drinks made with honey, ginger, lemon, and other natural ingredients are often promoted online as ways to “shrink” a swollen thyroid within minutes, there is no reliable evidence that a homemade recipe can return an enlarged thyroid to normal in 60 minutes. Thyroid enlargement can have several different causes, and the appropriate treatment depends on the underlying condition.

For a comforting traditional drink, begin with one cup of warm water, one teaspoon of honey, a few thin slices of fresh ginger, and a small squeeze of lemon. Place the ginger in a cup and pour over freshly boiled water. Allow it to steep for about 5 to 10 minutes so the ginger can release its flavor and aroma.

Remove the ginger pieces if desired, then allow the drink to cool slightly before adding the honey and lemon. Stir well and drink slowly while warm. The combination can be soothing when the throat feels dry or irritated, while the warmth also helps provide a pleasant sensation.

You can prepare this drink once or twice during the day as part of a normal diet. There is no need to make it extremely concentrated or consume large quantities. Too much ginger may cause stomach discomfort or heartburn in some people, and honey adds natural sugar.

If the concern is an enlarged or swollen thyroid, however, the most important step is finding out why it is enlarged. Thyroid swelling can occur with conditions such as thyroid nodules, inflammation, autoimmune thyroid disorders, iodine-related problems, or other thyroid abnormalities. Some causes require monitoring, while others may require medication or additional medical treatment.
