Waking up three or four times during the night to urinate can be frustrating, especially for men over 60. One common reason is an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). As the prostate grows, it can place pressure on the urethra and make it harder for the bladder to empty completely. This may lead to frequent urination, a weak urine stream, urgency, or repeated trips to the bathroom during the night.
For generations, different communities have prepared teas from leaves and other plants as part of traditional wellness practices. A warm herbal leaf tea can be incorporated into a healthy routine, but it is important to understand that there is no reliable evidence that a particular leaf can shrink an enlarged prostate or eliminate nighttime urination within 24 hours.
If you enjoy traditional herbal drinks, you can prepare a simple leaf infusion rather than using concentrated extracts or homemade preparations as medication.
Start by selecting clean, correctly identified leaves that are known to be suitable for culinary or herbal use. Avoid leaves collected from roadsides, areas treated with pesticides, or plants that you cannot positively identify.
Wash the leaves thoroughly under clean running water. Place a small handful of suitable leaves into a saucepan containing approximately two cups of water. Bring the water to a gentle boil and allow the leaves to simmer for several minutes. Turn off the heat, cover the saucepan, and allow the infusion to steep for another five to ten minutes.
Strain the liquid carefully and allow it to cool to a comfortable drinking temperature. If desired, you can add a small amount of honey for flavor. The tea should be considered a traditional beverage rather than a treatment for an enlarged prostate.
