Oregano is a flavorful herb that has been used in traditional cooking and herbal practices for generations. It contains plant compounds such as carvacrol and thymol, which have demonstrated antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. However, claims that oregano is “30 times stronger” than lemon or garlic, or that it can cure bacterial, fungal, or viral infections, are not established by good clinical evidence.
A simple oregano infusion is an easy way to enjoy the herb as part of your normal diet. To prepare it, place 1 teaspoon of dried oregano leaves in a cup. Pour about 250 ml of freshly boiled water over the leaves, cover the cup, and allow it to steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and allow it to cool slightly before drinking.
For a more refreshing version, add a small amount of lemon juice after the tea has cooled. You can also add a little honey for flavor if you normally consume honey.
If you prefer fresh oregano, wash a small handful of leaves thoroughly and gently crush them before adding them to hot water. Let the mixture steep for several minutes, then strain it before drinking.
Oregano can also be incorporated directly into meals. Add fresh or dried oregano to roasted vegetables, beans, soups, chicken, fish, tomato sauces, salads, or homemade dressings. This provides a simple way to increase the variety of herbs in your diet without treating oregano as a medicine.
It is important to remember that oregano used in food is different from concentrated oregano essential oil. Essential oil is highly concentrated and should not be swallowed casually or used in large quantities. It can irritate the mouth, throat, stomach, or skin, and concentrated herbal products can interact with certain medications.
If you have symptoms of a bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, oregano tea should not replace appropriate medical treatment. Persistent fever, difficulty breathing, severe pain, dehydration, worsening symptoms, or other concerning signs require proper medical evaluation.
The best way to enjoy oregano is as a flavorful herb that complements a balanced diet. Its naturally occurring compounds make it an interesting ingredient for cooking and traditional preparations, but laboratory antimicrobial activity does not mean that drinking oregano tea can eliminate an infection in the human body.
For a simple everyday preparation, start with one teaspoon of dried oregano, one cup of hot water, and 5 to 10 minutes of steeping time. Add lemon or honey according to taste, and enjoy it as a warm herbal drink rather than relying on it as a substitute for medical care.
